Picture this
A buyer needs 500 brackets by Friday. She types “metal fabrication near me” into Google.
Three companies come up. One has photos, a phone number and good reviews. She calls them.
You do great work, but she never saw you. Here’s how to be the one she calls.
Step 1: Get a website (one page is fine)
One page is enough: what you make, where you are, and your phone number.
Quick win: Put your phone number at the very top.
Show me how
Use a simple website builder like Google Sites, Wix or Squarespace. Add a short line on what you make, the materials you work with, your largest part size and the industries you serve. Add your address so buyers know you are local, and a photo of your floor. Make sure the page reads well on a phone, because many buyers search from one.
Step 2: Get on the map
A free Google Business Profile puts you on the map when buyers search nearby.
Quick win: Google your company name and click “Own this business?”
Show me how
Choose the category that fits best, like “Machine shop” or “Metal fabricator”, and add your hours, phone and website. Google will ask you to confirm the business is yours, usually by phone, email, video or postcard. Then add a few photos and a one-line description of what you make. Check it once a month and answer any questions people post.
Step 3: Show, don’t tell
A real photo of a finished part beats any stock picture.
Quick win: Snap 5 photos today: a part, a machine running, your team.
Show me how
Good light matters more than a good camera, so shoot near a window or open bay door. Show finished parts up close, your main machines, your inspection area and the people who do the work. Skip anything a customer would not want shown. Put the photos on your website, your Google profile and your directory listings.
Step 4: Be where buyers compare
Buyers compare suppliers in directories before they call.
Quick win: List your company on FirmsLedger in 5 minutes.
Show me how
Fill in every field you can: what you make, materials, certifications, industries served and a real description. A complete profile shows up for more searches than a name and phone number. Use the exact same company name, address and phone number on every site, so search engines know it is the same company.
Step 5: Be the first to reply
Buyers ask a few companies at once. A fast, clear answer stands out.
Quick win: Keep a ready-to-copy reply: price, lead time, questions.
Show me how
If you can’t price a job the same day, reply anyway: say you received it and when they will hear back. Ask for anything missing, like quantities, material or the drawing revision. Have quote emails show up on your phone. A quick “we got it” beats silence every time.
Step 6: Let customers brag for you
One line from a happy customer builds trust faster than any ad.
Quick win: Email 3 good customers your Google review link.
Show me how
Ask right after a job goes well, while it is fresh. Keep the email to two lines and include the review link from your Google profile, so it takes one click. Thank everyone who writes one, and reply politely to any bad review: buyers read the replies too.
Step 7: Say what you’re good at
Name your certifications and the industries you serve, in plain words.
Quick win: No certificate? Say “we inspect every part.”
Show me how
List certificates you really hold, like ISO 9001 or AS9100, and keep them current. Name the industries you work with most, like farm equipment, medical devices or oil and gas, so buyers in those fields know you understand their needs. Never claim a certificate you don’t hold.
Do these cost anything?
No. A Google Business Profile, a FirmsLedger listing and asking for reviews are all free. A simple one-page website can be free or a few dollars a month.
Which one should I do first?
Google Maps and a free directory listing. Both take minutes and help buyers find you right away.
Start with step 4 today
Listing on FirmsLedger is free and takes about five minutes.
