About Acme Electric Company
Acme Electric Company has been based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, since 1950, when Donald L. Barrigar purchased Standard Electric and rebranded it as Acme Electric. The business remains family-owned, now in its third generation of Barrigar leadership, with Jackson Barrigar serving as president since 2021. The firm operates as a full-service electrical contractor with four divisions—Construction, Engineering, Service, and Energy Solutions—employing more than 125 licensed electricians and support staff. Its scope covers residential, commercial, and industrial electrical work, including new construction, remodels, emergency repairs, and pre-construction services such as Building Information Modeling and pre-fabrication. The Energy Solutions division designs and installs solar arrays, KOHLER backup generators, electric-vehicle charging stations, and battery storage systems. Acme serves homeowners, businesses, factories, warehouses, agricultural operations, fabricators, and telecommunications providers across the Cedar Rapids–Iowa City corridor. Long-term clients include industrial facilities requiring process-equipment wiring and commercial buildings needing power distribution, lighting controls, and network infrastructure. The company emphasizes its legacy of training and safety: every electrician completes a five-year NJATC apprenticeship, and jobsites follow OSHA and NECA standards, with three of the last five years recording zero recordable injuries. Acme also highlights its commitment to customer service, citing measured response times and a policy of clear communication throughout each project.
