Bay City Electric Works was founded in 1932 by Bob and Leola Norris as a small appliance repair shop on University Avenue in San Diego. The business became a Kohler generator dealer in 1962 and was appointed Kohler's distributor for San Diego and Imperial Counties in 1971. Ownership changed hands several times: in 1984 the assets were purchased by CDS Electric (Wilmer Spitzer, Wally Dier, Tom Claycomb); Tom Claycomb took full control in 1986. In 2007 Mark Loftin, Chuck Loftin, and Rodney Lee acquired the company, and in 2021 the Lee family — Rod & Kim Lee, Austin & Kara Lee, and Adrian Lee — bought 100 percent of the stock, making it a family-owned operation. The corporate headquarters moved to a 70-employee facility in Poway, California, in 2012. Today the company operates as an authorized distributor for Kohler (now Rehlko) emergency standby generators, automatic transfer switches, and paralleling switchgear, as well as Bobcat industrial air compressors and portable generators. It maintains a multimillion-dollar parts inventory and provides 24/7 service, maintenance, and repair for all generator brands. Bay City also runs a rental fleet, offers application engineering and generator training for contractors and specifying engineers, and operates a 20,000-square-foot sales and service center opened in 2024 in Galt, California, to serve Northern California and Northern Nevada. The customer base spans commercial, industrial, and residential sectors, including healthcare facilities, data centers, municipal agencies, and homeowners across California, Nevada, and Hawaii. Contractors and specifying engineers rely on the firm's application engineering support for design, installation, and safety compliance.
