About Center for Composite Materials (CCM)

The Center for Composite Materials (CCM) was established in 1974 at the University of Delaware in Newark, Delaware. As a university-based research center, it operates under the College of Engineering and draws faculty from multiple departments including mechanical engineering, materials science, and chemical engineering. The center was created to advance interdisciplinary research in composite materials and has since been designated a Center of Excellence eight times by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense. CCM provides a full spectrum of composites research and development services, from material characterization and mechanical testing to process development, prototyping, and component validation. Its 53,688-square-foot facility houses equipment valued at more than $25 million, including autoclaves, resin infusion systems, automated fiber placement, additive manufacturing platforms, and a suite of thermal, mechanical, and nondestructive evaluation instruments. In a recent year, more than 51 faculty members, 41 research professionals and postdoctoral fellows, and 71 graduate and undergraduate students participated in over 50 research projects with annual expenditures exceeding $17 million. The center serves the automotive, aerospace, defense, and energy sectors. It maintains long-standing collaborations with government agencies such as the Department of Energy, NASA, DARPA, and the U.S. Army’s TARDEC, as well as with industry partners including BAE Systems, major OEMs, and Tier‑1 suppliers. More than 350 companies, ranging from startups to Fortune 500 firms, have engaged with CCM through its University‑Industry Consortium. CCM distinguishes itself through end-to-end integration of materials science, process engineering, and validation under one roof, enabling rapid translation of laboratory discoveries into manufacturable solutions. Its mission emphasizes technology transfer, workforce development, and the creation of predictive modeling tools that link atomistic physics to composite performance.
