Spectro Coating Corp. was founded in 1988 in Leominster, Massachusetts, when Hemendra Shah purchased the idled flock coating division of Vertipile/Quaker Fabrics and brought back 35 employees to rebuild the coating lines. The Claremont Flock division, which had been manufacturing in the United States since 1915, was acquired by Spectro in 2009, creating a vertically integrated operation. The company remains family-owned and is certified as a minority business enterprise. Today Spectro operates five coating lines with a capacity of up to 1,000,000 meters per week, coating widths up to 72 inches and substrates up to 60 mils thick. Its processes include flock coating, flock printing, air embossing, pigment printing, foil transfers, glitter printing, hot roll embossing, and a range of finishing treatments such as softeners, fire retardants, and water repellents. Commission coating is offered via knife-over-roll, reverse-roll, gravure, and rotary-screen methods. The company also produces custom short-cut fibers from 0.4 mm to over 6 mm in a full dye house and provides converting services—slitting, spooling, sheeting, and lamination—primarily for automotive flock tape through its American Flock Tape division.
