About FARM Food Processing Accelerator
The FARM (Food, Agriculture, Research, Manufacturing Center) accelerator sits on the Muskegon Community College campus in Muskegon, Michigan. Launched by the West Michigan Food Processing Association (WMFPA) with the Community Foundation for Muskegon County and Muskegon Community College—and affiliated with Michigan State University’s food-processing programs—the project secured a $2 million state infrastructure grant in 2019. Construction started in June 2020 and finished in early 2021. The center was built to help stage-one and stage-two food entrepreneurs, plus established companies needing offsite test-manufacturing space. The facility offers 8,000 square feet of flexible, food-grade suites for commercial fruit and vegetable processing. It meets USDA and FDA standards and includes loading docks, refrigeration and freezer storage, energy-efficient systems, and waste and water handling. Tenants bring their own processing equipment and lease space on flexible terms, graduating to their own plants as they grow. The site also houses the MSU Mobile Processing Lab, a trailer-scale unit used for teaching and career outreach. FARM serves early-stage food-processing ventures and mature firms seeking pilot-scale production, connecting them with venture capital, student talent from MSU and MCC, and regional kitchen incubators like Kitchen 242 and the Starting Block. Target industries include food processing and agriculture, with a focus on companies planning North American or export expansion. The center also supports workforce development through MSU’s certificate and degree programs. WMFPA designed FARM as a one-stop shop to move innovations from concept to commercialization, strengthen job training, and bolster West Michigan’s food-processing cluster.
