Green Mountain Electric Supply traces its roots to 1953, when Earl Laber, Raymond Place, and Norman Bean opened a motor repair and rewinding shop in Newport, Vermont. By the mid-1960s the partners had expanded into selling electrical supplies to factories across northeastern Vermont. In 1970 the business was renamed Green Mountain Electric Supply, Inc., and after Place and Bean retired, Laber ran the company until 1977, when he sold it to his three sons—Gary, Scott, and Gregg—and partner Steven Carpenter, establishing a second-generation, family-owned operation. The company shifted entirely to wholesale distribution in 1986, abandoning motor repair to focus on electrical supplies. A 12,000-square-foot warehouse was built in Newport in 1988 and later expanded to 23,000 square feet with a showroom and offices. Through a series of acquisitions—Choiniere Electric (2001), Burgess Electrical Supply (2004), Glens Falls Electric Supply (2008), Valley Electric Supply (2010), and Red Hook Electric Supply (2016)—GMES grew to operate branches across Vermont, New Hampshire, and New York, with corporate offices established in Colchester, Vermont, in 2014. A renewable energies division launched in 2011 added photovoltaic solar sales to the product lineup. The company emphasizes competitive pricing, a deep inventory spread across multiple locations, and a knowledgeable sales team to assist with product selection.
