About Hoosier Woodworks
Hoosier Woodworks operates from a small workshop in Bloomington, Indiana, founded in 2014 by Roger, a U.S. Navy veteran who served eight years aboard a frigate and attack submarines. After a career in construction trades and 15 years in specialty outdoor gear retail, he left to focus on raising his two children and pursue a lifelong dream of owning a woodworking business. The shop is veteran-owned and runs as a one-person operation. The shop produces custom cabinets, bookcases, built-in furniture, and handles furniture repair and antique canoe restoration. It also manufactures handcrafted burial flag cases from American black cherry or maple, featuring dovetailed reinforced corner joints, sold through an online store. In addition, Roger teaches private woodworking classes limited to one or two students, and produces the "Working At Woodworking" podcast, which has reached nearly 75,000 downloads over 100 episodes since its 2021 launch. Customers include homeowners seeking custom furniture and repairs, families of veterans, firefighters, and law enforcement officers for flag cases, and woodworking hobbyists attending classes. The podcast audience consists of skilled woodworkers interested in small-shop operations. The business was featured on the local PBS program "Journey Indiana" highlighting canoe restoration work. Roger started the business to be more present for his family and to fulfill a dream of craftsmanship. He emphasizes personal interaction, flexible scheduling, and a teaching approach that uses "kinder, gentler math" and metric measurements. The flag cases are marketed as made in the USA with attention to joinery for strength and beauty.
