About Jonathan A. Nussbaum - Furniture Maker
Jonathan A. Nussbaum established his furniture-making practice in Portland, Oregon, in 2009 after a three-year apprenticeship with German Master Furniture Maker Kai Fuhrmann. The sole proprietor began with hand tools, gradually incorporating modern machinery as he mastered each traditional technique, a philosophy that still guides the one-person shop today. The shop produces custom furniture across dining, living, bedroom, and office categories — tables, chairs, benches, case goods, beds, desks, and conference tables — using locally sourced, responsibly managed hardwoods such as Oregon White Oak, Big Leaf Maple, American Cherry, and Western Walnut. Work combines time-honored joinery with both hand and machine processes, yielding one-off pieces built to heirloom standards in a modest Portland facility. The maker collaborates closely on design, wood movement, and finish details throughout each project. Nussbaum cites his apprenticeship foundation, commitment to environmental responsibility, and the ability to give each client undivided attention as the reasons the business exists. The one-person structure ensures direct communication from concept through delivery, with the maker overseeing every joint, surface, and installation himself.
