About Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative
Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative (MVEC) is headquartered in Jordan, Minnesota. Founded on March 6, 1937, the cooperative was formed when three small electric organizations from Carver, Le Sueur, and Scott counties merged under President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal rural electrification program. The cooperative is owned by its member-owners and operates as a not-for-profit utility. MVEC provides electric distribution service to more than 48,500 meters across a 968-square-mile territory spanning nine Minnesota counties: Blue Earth, Carver, Dakota, Hennepin, Le Sueur, Rice, Scott, Sibley, and Waseca. The cooperative purchases wholesale power from two generation providers and maintains its own distribution infrastructure, including regular maintenance and tree-trimming programs. Notable growth milestones include the acquisition of 3,500 members from Alliant Energy in 2015 and a service-area exchange with the City of Shakopee that added 537 new services in 2022. Its load-management programs, branded as Energy Wise, allow participants to reduce peak demand through controlled water heating, air conditioning, and smart thermostat cycling. MVEC also sponsors community initiatives such as the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association’s Youth Tour.
