MxD operates from Chicago, Illinois, where it was founded in 2014 as the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII). It is the second of 18 institutes in the Manufacturing USA network, a national initiative to secure the future of U.S. manufacturing through innovation, collaboration, and education. The institute was established in partnership with the U.S. Department of War, which remains a founding member and co-investor in its research and demonstration portfolio. Members such as Siemens, EY, DMG MORI, and Betacom use the floor for experimentation with AI, robotics, AR/VR, digital twins, and 5G. MxD's three pillars — convene, advance, empower — guide its work: convening manufacturers, academia, and government; advancing digital adoption and secure cybersecurity practices; and empowering the workforce through accessible learning tools. More than 350,000 learners have engaged with MxD Learn programs, and the Virtual Training Center offers online courses from AI to cybersecurity. MxD serves the U.S. industrial base with a focus on defense collaboration. As the Department of War-designated National Center for Cybersecurity in Manufacturing, it develops programs to protect supply chains from cyber attacks, including a Cyber Resource Hub and CMMC compliance guidance. The institute works closely with the Organic Industrial Base — government-owned facilities that produce munitions and maintain weapon systems — to modernize Army and Marine Corps industrial operations. Its network of over 350 members spans industry, academia, and government. MxD was created to transform the outdated image of manufacturing into a clean, safe, and visionary technology leader, improving productivity, quality, and global competitiveness. Its mission is to strengthen U.S. manufacturing competitiveness through technology innovation, workforce development, and cybersecurity preparedness, ensuring a reliable industrial backstop in times of war and emergency.
