Nashville Electric Service - Music City Solar

About Nashville Electric Service - Music City Solar

The program was launched on August 1, 2018, when the utility transformed a former landfill off Interstate 65 into Nashville’s first community solar park. NES developed the project in direct response to customer demand for renewable energy options. The solar park comprises 17,020 photovoltaic panels and feeds clean electricity directly into the NES grid. Residential and commercial customers can subscribe to individual panels and receive a monthly bill credit for the energy produced through 2038. As of the latest data, 3,142 panels have been leased, generating over 21 million kilowatt-hours, while 12,863 panels remain available for subscription. The utility also administers the Solar Angel Fund, which accepts tax-deductible donations to provide energy assistance for low-income households; 1,015 panels have been donated to that effort. The program serves NES’s residential and small-business customers across the Nashville metro area, including renters who cannot install rooftop systems. It also partners with The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee to distribute Solar Angel funds locally. Pinnacle Financial Partners is noted as a financial collaborator. NES frames the initiative as a way to align the utility’s offerings with the city’s rapid growth and environmental goals. By locating the array on a reclaimed landfill and requiring no maintenance from subscribers, the program aims to make solar participation accessible and maintenance-free while fostering community engagement through shared energy credits and charitable giving.
