About Nebraska Furniture Mart
Nebraska Furniture Mart, known as NFM, was founded in 1937 by Rose Blumkin — known as Mrs. B — in the basement of her husband’s downtown Omaha shop. The business remains family-owned, now in its fourth generation, and is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. The company operates large-format retail stores selling furniture, appliances, electronics, flooring, and home furnishings. Its Omaha campus spans 77 acres and includes a state-of-the-art warehouse and distribution center, a clearance center, and a factory outlet. The Kansas City location alone provides over 1,000,000 square feet of retail and distribution space, with additional stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Des Moines, and a mixed-use development called Grandscape in Texas. NFM serves residential customers across the Midwest and Texas, offering free 48-hour delivery, installation, and haul-away on qualifying appliance orders. The company does not manufacture products but curates a broad selection from brands such as Apple, Sony, and various furniture and appliance manufacturers. NFM traces its differentiation to Mrs. B’s founding principles: selling cheap, telling the truth, and providing outstanding selection and service. The 1983 acquisition by Berkshire Hathaway, sealed with a handshake between Blumkin and Warren Buffett, added financial stability while the company maintained its family-run culture and community-focused values.
