New Jersey Textiles, Inc. traces its roots to 1945, when Israel Merdinger and his son Julius arrived in the United States from Poland and entered the rag trade in New York City. Starting with a hand truck, they collected wool clippings from garment factories in the Garment Center and transported them to what would become SoHo, eventually leasing warehouse space and purchasing a building to sort and bale the waste for export to overseas mills. The business later relocated to Clifton, New Jersey, where it operates today under the leadership of President David Merdinger. The company functions as a wholesale fabric distributor, purchasing closeout and excess inventory from clothing manufacturers and jobbers throughout the New York–New Jersey metropolitan area. Its stock turns constantly and is sold by the yard, by the bolt, or by the pound. Current offerings include print chiffons, ITY prints, taffetas, and laces. In addition to fabric wholesaling, New Jersey Textiles continues to import and export wool clippings for reprocessing. Customers span retail stores, apparel manufacturers, interior decorators, designers, and the home rug‑hooking trade across the United States. The operation began as a family effort to build a livelihood from post‑war textile waste, evolving over decades into a dual‑track business that both recycles wool by‑products and supplies discounted yard goods to a broad base of buyers.
