About Okonite Company
The company traces its earliest customers to Samuel F. B. Morse for his telegraph network and Thomas A. Edison for the Pearl Street Generating Station, the nation’s first central power plant, built in New York City in 1882. In June 1976, Okonite became the largest company in the United States to be owned by its employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Trust, giving its workforce a direct stake in product quality and service. Today Okonite operates six manufacturing facilities in Cumberland, Rhode Island; Paterson, New Jersey; Orangeburg, South Carolina (including a dedicated compounding plant); and Santa Maria, California. From these plants it produces a range of insulated cables from 300 volts to 345 kilovolts, including instrumentation, power and control, medium-voltage, and high-voltage products. The company formulates and compounds its own insulating and jacketing materials—such as Okoguard® EPR and laminated polypropylene paper—in house, and employs a staff of 500 to 999 people across its operations. Okonite serves electric utilities (distribution, transmission, and generation including fossil and nuclear), oil and gas refineries and production platforms, chemical plants, military bases, railroads and transit systems, pulp and paper mills, hospitals, colleges and universities, water treatment plants, data centers, and renewable energy installations such as wind farms, solar farms, and biofuel facilities. Domestic sales are supported by a network of 23 district sales offices and five service centers. The company emphasizes its in-house material development through a dedicated Materials Research Center, a commitment to continuous improvement and modernization programs, and applications engineering support from its district sales personnel. All products are manufactured 100 percent in the United States.
