Power Engineering & Manufacturing, Ltd. (PEM) was founded in 1975 in Waterloo, Iowa, by Saul Herscovici and several members of the Warren family. The company specializes in the custom design and manufacturing of heavy-duty gearboxes and has operated continuously from its Iowa headquarters for nearly five decades. PEM provides complete gearbox solutions including design, manufacturing, reverse engineering, rebuild, and inspection services. Its machining capabilities encompass 12 CNC lathes, five CNC milling machines, two Okuma MCR-A5CII double-column machining centers, six CNC hobbing machines, five gear grinding machines, and additional grinding, shaping, keyseating, plasma cutting, sawing, dynamic balancing, robotic welding, and stress-relieving equipment. The facility also houses two large-capacity coordinate measuring machines for inspection. The company serves customers in defense, aerospace, mining, and general industrial markets. Notable projects include AD-43 gearboxes for the U.S. Navy and units for helicopter test stands and roll crushers. PEM also repairs and rebuilds gearboxes from manufacturers such as Falk, Demag, Flender, and Dodge, and supports clients across the United States and in more than 48 countries. PEM emphasizes ingenuity, attention to detail, and customer service as differentiators. Its proprietary MEGAGEAR® design can increase horsepower or torque by up to 35% over OEM designs, and the company offers expedited service and storage agreements to minimize downtime.
