About Ragged Island Brewing Company
Ragged Island Brewing Company operates on a 37-acre farm in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The business was conceived in 2016 by a group of friends who shared a passion for craft beer, the outdoors, and entrepreneurship. In March 2017 the founders opened a one-barrel brewery, then upgraded to a 3.5-barrel system by July of that year. The company is owned by Matt Gray and Katie Gray. After five years the operation moved to its current farm property, where a renovated barn houses a 10-barrel brewhouse designed for small batches of core recipes and experimental brews. An 1890s farmhouse has been remodeled into a taproom with multiple outdoor decks, a greenhouse, and views of Narragansett Bay. The full-time team includes head brewer Derek Luke, general manager Bill Schmidt, and farmaculturalist Andrew Bray, supported by part-time taproom staff. The brewery sells its own beer directly to consumers through the taproom, which is open seven days a week from noon to 9 p.m. It also offers non-alcoholic beer from Athletic Brewing, soda, seltzer, and lemonade. Outside food is permitted, and the company partners with food trucks Wednesday through Sunday. Event rental spaces are available for private functions. The founders say the venture was driven by a love of craft beer and the outdoors, and the team works to deliver high-quality products with strong customer service in a setting that reflects those values.
