About Schluter's Metal Artwork and Welding
Schluter's Metal Artwork and Welding operates from Helena, Montana, where it was founded in 2011 by Colton Schluter, a journeyman-carded welder. After earning a welding degree at VoTech and joining the union in 2012, Schluter worked on refineries and power plants coast to coast, eventually earning his journeyman boilermaker card in 2016. The shop began as a side venture during his union years and became his full-time focus in 2017. The company provides custom metal fabrication and welding — railings, gates, stairs, structural steel, furniture, and decorative pieces such as wildlife silhouettes, wall art, and custom signs — all cut, bent, and welded in-house from steel, aluminum, and stainless. An on-site powder coating line, operated under the PowderCoating of Helena banner, offers more than 6,500 colors with gloss, matte, texture, and heat-resistant finishes. The shop also coats customer-supplied parts, handling everything from automotive wheels and roll cages to commercial brackets and handrails. To date, the team has completed over 1,000 projects. Schluter's serves homeowners, contractors, and commercial builders throughout the Helena area and Lewis & Clark County. Residential clients commission handrails, gates, and artistic metalwork; commercial contractors rely on the shop for structural steel elements, bollards, and brackets. Other fabrication shops without in-house coating send their work to Schluter's for finishing, and automotive customers bring parts for durable powder coating. The business emphasizes direct, end-to-end control: every project is custom with no catalog parts, the same shop that fabricates a piece also coats it, and owner Colton Schluter oversees design, fit-up, and finish personally. Quotes are firm, with scope changes discussed before any extra cost.
