About Sunshine International Foods
Sunshine International Foods, Inc. is a family-owned corporation headquartered in Methuen, Massachusetts. The business traces its roots to 1958, when George Cherabie founded George's Bakery in Lawrence, MA after emigrating from Lebanon. Emile S. Maroun arrived from Lebanon in 1972, later marrying Georgette Cherabie; the couple purchased the bakery in 1981 and expanded its Mediterranean product line. Frustrated by recalls of imported tahini, they established Sunshine International Foods to manufacture their own paste in a 30,000-square-foot Methuen facility. The company produces the Sesame King line of pasteurized tahini paste in seven flavors—Roasted, Light Roast, Olive Oil, Honey, Garlic, Cajun, and Chocolate—using 100% mechanically hulled sesame seeds with no chemicals, additives, or preservatives. A proprietary manufacturing and pasteurization process is paired with in-house lab testing under GMP and HACCP guidelines. Daily output reaches 15 tons of tahini, with plans to double capacity. The affiliated George's Bakery supplies over 2,000 items, including pita breads, dipping oils, noodles, and pickled products. George's Bakery pita breads are stocked in supermarkets throughout New England, and the company also sells direct via an online store. The Maroun family created Sunshine International Foods to guarantee quality after foreign tahini recalls, emphasizing a chemical-free mechanical hulling method and a unique pasteurization step they say cannot be duplicated. Third-generation leaders George, Emile Jr., and Jennifer Maroun now manage operations, pursuing sustainability through energy-efficient lighting, recycling, and byproduct reuse.
