About The Colorado Tent Company
The Colorado Tent Company operates from Denver, Colorado, tracing its roots to 1890 when the Denver Tent and Awning Company opened on Larimer Street to serve miners, ranchers, railroad crews, and military posts. A second shop, the Colorado Tent & Awning Company, was founded by Robert S. Gutshall in 1899 on Lawrence Street. The two competitors merged in 2003, and in 2022 the business was acquired by Harlan and Karah Hummer, who retained the existing team and standards. The company handcrafts canvas wall tents, tipis, awnings, and custom shelter goods at its facility at 10975 E. 55th Avenue. Every tent is cut, sewn, and inspected by hand using 10.10‑oz Sunforger® marine‑grade cotton duck, double‑stitched seams, and brass hardware. Production runs are limited each month, with a current lead time of three to six weeks for both stock and custom orders. Customers span hunting outfitters, camps and non‑profits, glamping and hospitality operators, event and gathering planners, and commercial and corporate clients. Historical contracts include military, scouting, and ranching accounts. The shop differentiates itself through a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, a repair‑first design philosophy (no glues or seals that prevent future fixes), and adherence to the same materials and methods used since the early 1900s.
