About The Manufacturing Collaborative

The Manufacturing Collaborative is a non-profit advanced manufacturing center located at Vermont State University in Randolph Center, Vermont. It was established in 2020 with founding funding from the Department of Defense’s Industrial Base Assessment and Sustainment (IBAS) program. The organization operates as a collaborative hub for industry, academia, and workforce development. The center provides a range of advanced manufacturing services including design and reverse engineering, prototyping and small-run production, product metrology and testing, material characterization, and advanced consulting. Its facility houses a broad suite of equipment such as 5-axis CNC machining, wire EDM, waterjet and laser cutting, polymer and metal additive manufacturing systems (including HTFDM, SLS, DMLS, and binder jetting), heat treatment furnaces, and metrology tools like CT scanning and CMM. A team of engineers and technicians supports projects from inception through validation. The Collaborative serves U.S. manufacturers across defense, medical device, aerospace, and consumer goods sectors. For example, it helped Low Pressure Studio iterate and simulate a binding chassis for Rome and Bataleon snowboards, eliminating wasted tooling investment. Its consulting work extends to supply chain development, complex project management, and derisking product and process investments for the defense industrial base. As a non-profit, the organization’s stated mission is to foster a resilient manufacturing ecosystem by connecting companies, institutions, experts, and learners. It emphasizes workforce training through paid, project-based learning programs that build demonstrable skills in digital engineering, rapid prototyping, and product testing, aiming to sustain the supply chain and inspire the next generation of manufacturing talent.
