Walco Electric Co. opened in 1931 in Providence, Rhode Island, when founder Edmund Waldman began manufacturing radio antenna kits before pivoting to electric motor repair for the region’s wire and textile mills. The shop grew alongside the port of Providence into one of the Northeast’s largest electrical apparatus service facilities, adding a maintenance machine shop, electrical contracting, and an electronic motor control group over the next four decades. Today Walco operates through three groups: Automation and Controls, which provides systems engineering, drive integration, and motion control as a Siemens Solution Partner with more than 1,500 drives installed worldwide; Industrial Power Systems, delivering electrical and mechanical maintenance, repair, and on‑site service; and Rail Transportation, which rebuilds, rewinds, and remanufactures AC and DC traction motors, generators, and auxiliary equipment at what the company calls New England’s largest transit motor rebuilding facility, staffed by over 40 technicians working three shifts with 24/7 emergency coverage. The rail group serves mass‑transit agencies and Class I railroads, including the MBTA, SEPTA, Metro‑North, New York City Transit, and the Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Baltimore authorities. Automation and Controls customers span metals, paper, plastics, converting, textiles, and roofing industries, while Industrial Power Systems supports national and international industrial plants.
