About West Tennessee Solar Exhibit

The project originated in 2009 when a $62.5-million allocation from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was awarded to the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. The University of Tennessee Research Foundation was contracted to oversee creation and operation of the facility, which was designed and built by Signal Energy, LLC of Chattanooga in 2011, with grid connection achieved in early 2012. The farm comprises approximately 21,000 fixed-tilt, ground-mounted photovoltaic panels generating electricity sold under purchase agreements to Chickasaw Electric Cooperative and the Tennessee Valley Authority. Alongside power production, the SPECTRUM exhibit provides hands-on learning stations, games, and QR-linked resources to teach solar energy basics to students, homeowners, and business visitors. The exhibit partners include Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the Tennessee Valley Authority, and multiple state agencies. The facility serves utilities, educational institutions, and the general public. Its electricity feeds the regional grid through TVA and Chickasaw Electric Cooperative, while the exhibit attracts school groups, science-fair participants, and homeowners exploring rooftop solar. Partners such as the U.S. Department of Energy, Tennessee Advanced Energy Business Council, and Volkswagen reflect a broad stakeholder base spanning government, research, and industry. The project was conceived as a dual-purpose asset: a revenue-generating solar array and a public showcase for renewable energy technology. Its backers emphasized job creation, education, and technology commercialization as core goals, positioning the site as a living laboratory for solar adoption in Tennessee.
