About Alabama Correctional Industries
Alabama Correctional Industries (ACI) operates from Montgomery, Alabama, as a self-supportive division of the Alabama Department of Corrections. The organization was established to provide a work-training program for inmates, though the exact founding year is not publicly disclosed. It functions under state ownership, with no individual founders named in available records. ACI manages a variety of product lines produced through inmate labor, supplying goods to state departments, institutions, and political subdivisions across Alabama. The division handles procurement of raw materials and services needed for production, though specific manufacturing processes, facility size, headcount, and output volumes are not detailed in public materials. The primary customers are Alabama state agencies, public institutions, and local political subdivisions. ACI also maintains a vendor registration system for external suppliers through the Alabama Buys procurement platform, and publishes bid invitations, intent-to-award notices, and awarded bid records. The division’s stated purpose is twofold: to deliver vocational training that prepares incarcerated individuals for employment, and to meet the procurement needs of state entities to the extent its production capacity allows.
