About Chisel & Wood
Chisel & Wood operates from a studio woodshop on an 11-acre property in Dadeville, Alabama. The business was founded in 2019 by Zach, a woodworker raised in Northern Michigan and trained in Northern California. After leaving his previous job, he drove cross-country to California where Chisel & Wood began in a friend's workshop with minimal equipment. He then attended the Krenov School of Fine Woodworking in Fort Bragg before returning to Alabama to build his current shop. The company designs and builds custom furniture using solid American hardwoods. All work — design, lumber selection, milling, machining, joinery, sanding, and finishing — is performed in-house in a climate-controlled, 1,500-square-foot workshop. The space is organized into functional tool islands and centers around a traditional workbench where handplanes and other hand tools are used for detailed work. Chisel & Wood serves residential customers seeking handcrafted furniture for the home. Its pieces are marketed directly to homeowners through the company's website and portfolio. The founder's training at the Krenov School and emphasis on hand-tool craftsmanship distinguish the operation. Zach has stated that the business exists to tell the story of each piece of wood and to maintain excellence by controlling every step of the process.
