The business began in a one-car garage when founders George Wightman and Carl Wetzig Sr. established the shop on principles of honesty and hard work. Second-generation owners Carl Wetzig Jr. and Gary Wightman continue to lead the company today. The company runs a 32,000-square-foot facility on a five-acre industrial site equipped with modern machinery including a Trumpf TruLaser 2030 4,000-watt fiber laser, a Trumpf TruBend 2100 press brake, a Wysong 12-foot 175-ton hydraulic press brake, a Lockformer Vulcan 2900 dual-table CNC plasma cutter, and a Fasti FP60 CNC panel former. Core capabilities span sheet metal fabrication (CNC laser, plasma, and shear cutting; CNC press brake forming and panel folding; rolling), structural fabrication (sawing, punching, drilling), certified welding (MIG, TIG, stick, flux core, pulsed MIG, spot, field), assembly of mechanical components and modules, finishing (painting, laser etching, glass beading, grinding), and 3D modeling with Inventor and AutoCAD. Field services cover equipment installation, field welding, plant maintenance, project management, and coordination drawings. The shop also provides turnkey HVAC system design, duct fabrication, and installation, plus custom machine guarding fabrication and installation. Avon Lake Sheet Metal serves a diverse customer base across automotive, steel and foundry, chemical, plastics, construction, food processing, general manufacturing, retail, education, and health care industries.
