About Berkwood Farms
Berkwood Farms operates from Des Moines, Iowa, as a farmer-owned coalition of more than 90 independent family farmers. The company does not disclose a founding date, but its membership includes second- through fifth-generation producers who have committed to a shared code of humane and environmentally responsible animal husbandry. The structure passes rewards directly to the farming families who raise the animals. The coalition specializes in 100 percent pure, antibiotic-free heirloom Berkshire pork. Animals are raised without hormones or antibiotics under practices designed to be ecologically sustainable. Berkwood Farms describes itself as one of the largest American suppliers of certified pure heirloom Berkshire pork and the only farmer-owned company with national distribution. The network’s scale allows it to serve both wholesale channels and an online direct-to-consumer shop. Berkwood Farms emphasizes that its farmer-ownership model aligns incentives toward quality and stewardship. By eliminating outside investors, the coalition says it can maintain strict husbandry standards while returning economic benefits to the families who do the daily work of raising the pigs.
