About Hawaii Solar Outfitters
Hawaii Solar Outfitters operates from Pāhoa on the Big Island of Hawaii. Founder Tim Heltzel launched the company after a decade of solar installation experience in East Hawaii, driven by frustration with large firms that priced out homeowners and forced them through lengthy utility interconnection queues and county permitting processes. The business remains a sole proprietorship with no sales staff or commissioned representatives. The company designs and installs off-grid and grid-tied solar power systems, specializing in off-grid configurations that avoid HELCO interconnection requirements. Heltzel personally handles every project — from system sizing and component selection to installation and follow-up. Typical installations use SUNKET 430W UL-listed solar panels, EG4 hybrid inverters, and EG4 LiFePO4 battery storage sized for Hawaii's climate. A free off-grid health check includes real-world battery load testing and full site analysis. Hawaii Solar Outfitters serves residential customers across East Hawaii, including Hilo, Keaau, Pahoa, Mountain View, Fern Forest, Fern Acres, and Volcano. Projects range from basic cabin systems starting around $10,000 to full homestead installations with heavy loads such as air conditioning and well pumps. The installer also works with existing off-grid systems that suffer from excessive generator run-time or battery degradation. Heltzel emphasizes direct accountability: the same person who designs the system installs it and returns for any service needs. Components are chosen based on real-world testing in local conditions rather than specifications alone. By eliminating sales commissions and permitting delays for off-grid builds, the company aims to deliver energy independence faster and at lower cost than conventional solar contractors.
