HPC Foods Ltd traces its roots to 1946 when Kakuichi Tottori founded Honolulu Poi Company as a small poi milling operation with three employees in Honolulu, Hawaii. His son James took over in 1950, joined by his son Ernest in 1952. As the business expanded into sprouts and processed vegetables, the name changed to HPC Foods, Ltd. in 1990. Today, the fourth generation of the Tottori family leads a workforce of over 180 employees. The company operates a 15,000-square-foot, GFSI-certified produce processing facility opened in 2004, offering fresh-cut produce, packaging, and private-label manufacturing with 99–100% product utilization. Under its Taro Brand, HPC produces poi, lomi salmon, sprouts, and salad mixes, and grows its own sprouts. A fleet of 21 temperature-controlled refrigerated trucks and a team of 24 drivers, merchandisers, and supervisors support statewide retail distribution and merchandising for both HPC brands and partner labels such as Aloha Tofu, Chun Wah Kam, Fresh Express, and Ready Pac. HPC serves foodservice, retail, institutional, hospitality, and education customers across Hawaii. Its clients include all major supermarkets, restaurant chains such as McDonald’s Restaurants of Hawaii, foodservice providers like Sodexo Hawaii, hotels including Halekulani and Hyatt Regency Waikiki, and institutions such as Kapiolani Community College. Some supplier and customer relationships span more than 60 years. The founding mission—to develop local industry and preserve Hawaii’s farmers—remains central. Ernest Tottori noted in 1978 that his grandfather aimed to build local industry and his father sought to help preserve farmers. That commitment continues through partnerships with local growers and a focus on food safety, cold-chain integrity, and kosher certification (OU) for sprouts and poi.
