About Manufacture Good
Manufacture Good, originally founded as Magic City Woodworks in 2013, operates from a training campus in downtown Birmingham, Alabama. The organization began in a borrowed one-car garage in nearby Hoover when founder Lawrence Sheffield launched a grassroots effort to teach woodworking trades to young men alongside spiritual mentorship. The Lawson family provided the initial workspace, and within a year the program outgrew the space, eventually receiving a donated commercial warehouse from the Cathey family that enabled expansion into a dedicated facility. A master craftsman team oversees production, which also includes a firewood operation that cuts, splits, seasons, delivers, and stacks wood for customers. The apprenticeship program pays participants while they learn woodworking and life skills, with the workshop serving as both a production floor and a training ground. Finished pieces are sold to residential clients, churches, and businesses nationwide, while the firewood service delivers directly to local customers. The apprentice cohort—typically young men seeking trade skills and personal development—forms the core labor force, supported by mentors, shop staff, and an executive team that includes an executive director, operations director, and apprenticeship foreman. A board of directors drawn from local construction, finance, and healthcare sectors provides governance. Sheffield has stated that the enterprise was started to create a workshop where young men could come to faith while developing the hands and minds needed to provide for themselves and their families. The organization describes its model as “making disciples while making good things,” using product revenue and donor support to sustain a ministry that aims to prepare participants for roles as husbands, fathers, craftsmen, and community leaders.
