About Messer Truck and Van Maine, Messer Truck Equipment
Messer Truck and Van operates from Westbrook, Maine, tracing its roots to 1899 when Walter A. Messer opened a one-man blacksmith and ship-smithing shop on Union Street in Portland. The family-owned business, now in its fourth generation, began by forging wagons, sleighs, and ironwork for ships before pivoting to truck bodies as motor vehicles replaced horse-drawn transport. Today the company designs, installs, and services custom upfits for trucks and vans, handling everything from initial engineering through in-house installation and final inspection. The shop also provides repair and warranty support for the products it installs. Messer emphasizes craftsmanship, clear communication, and a crew-first approach, values reinforced by its community partnerships with organizations like Westbrook Regional Vocational Center and STEAM Cathedral. Leadership continuity—Jeffrey Messer, the founder’s great-grandson, also served as NTEA president in 2015—underscores the firm’s deep industry ties.
