About Piston Automotive Louisville
Piston Automotive operates from Louisville, Kentucky, as part of Piston Group, a private investment platform founded in 1996 by former NBA champion Vinnie Johnson. The group began with a $1 million investment and has grown into a minority-owned manufacturing enterprise spanning 21 facilities and employing more than 10,000 people across its portfolio companies. The group's three brands focus on automotive manufacturing: Piston Automotive serves as a value-add assembly supplier, producing modules and assemblies for major OEMs; Piston Interiors provides design, engineering, and manufacturing of automotive interior systems; and Detroit Thermal Systems develops and manufactures climate control systems and components. Together they cover assembly, interior technology, and thermal management, with group revenue reaching $3.1 billion in 2024. Primary customers are global automotive manufacturers, including Ford, General Motors, Toyota, Honda, and Stellantis. The company holds Ford Q1 certification and has earned supplier awards from each of those OEMs, such as GM's Supplier of the Year, Toyota's Quality Performance Award, and Stellantis' Minority Business Enterprise of the Year. Piston Group states it was founded not simply to manufacture but to "make things better" by building teams dedicated to excellence. Its purpose centers on creating value through innovation, diversity, and supplier development, with a formal program to recruit diverse businesses including minority-, woman-, and veteran-owned firms.
