Plas-Tech Tooling Inc. was founded in 1993 by Dean and Marcia Sonquist in Garner, Iowa. The business began in the couple’s garage, initially focused on injection mold building and repair for local manufacturers. By 1996 the operation had outgrown that space and moved to its current location in Garner, where it has expanded into a full-service machining and molding facility. Today the company operates both a CNC machine shop and an injection molding department under one roof. Its machining lineup includes multiple Hurco vertical mills (VM10, VM30, VMX42, VMX50), Haas and Hurco lathes with live tooling and bar feeders, and a Puma 2600SYB II with opposing spindle. For molding, it runs a 300-ton JSW 280 ADS electric press and a 180-ton Sumitomo SH160 hydraulic press. Value‑added services include assembly, kitting, welding, inventory management, CAD drafting (SolidWorks, Mastercam), reverse engineering with a portable Hexagon CMM, and design‑for‑manufacturability feedback. The shop serves a range of industries, with a noted focus on electronic‑industry fixturing using specialty plastics. It also supports startups and established OEMs that need rapid prototypes, emergency machining (including after‑hours response), or high‑volume “lights‑out” molding. Past work includes machining a critical part from solid bar stock when a casting supplier failed, delivering parts within weeks, and running high‑volume molding campaigns on electric presses. Plas-Tech emphasizes the flexibility of a small company combined with the reliability and technology of a larger one.
