About Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. was founded in 1980 in Chico, California, by homebrewer Ken Grossman. Grossman, who had operated The Home Brew Shop in Chico, assembled his first brewhouse from scrap dairy equipment and began producing a pale ale showcasing whole-cone Cascade hops. The company has remained 100% family-owned and operated since its inception. Operations now span two production sites: the original Chico facility and a second brewery in Mills River, North Carolina, which together distribute to all 50 states. Both locations feature taprooms and event spaces that host concerts and community gatherings. Sierra Nevada serves the craft beer market through wholesale distribution to retailers, bars, and restaurants, as well as direct-to-consumer sales via its taprooms and online merchandise shop. The company emphasizes independent ownership and a quality-first philosophy, citing Grossman’s early decision to stay family-controlled to maintain standards. It also highlights sustainability initiatives, such as on-site renewable energy generation, waste reduction, and regenerative agriculture on its farmland, framing these practices as integral to its brewing ethos.
