About Stuart David Furniture - Serving Sacramento, East Bay, Fresno, Modesto, & Ceres
Stuart David Furniture operates from Ceres, California, tracing its roots to 1961 when Stuart Neilson and his wife Lela opened Stuart's Cabinet Shop in Modesto. The family-owned business began by building custom cabinets for local homes, earning a reputation for durability. In 1980, their son David designed a roll-top desk that sparked demand for furniture, to a storefront on Modesto's J Street and later a larger facility on Tully Avenue. After selling the retail operation to focus on production, David took over the company, which now distributes nationally. The company manufactures made-to-order hardwood furniture, including bedroom, dining, living room, home office, entertainment, and wall bed collections. Customers select from styles such as mission, traditional, transitional, craftsman, country, and Amish, choosing wood species — cherry, maple, oak, quartersawn oak, rustic alder, and hickory — along with stains, paints, hardware, and dimensions. Production emphasizes responsibly sourced North American hardwoods, a recycling system, and finishes that meet California's stringent environmental standards. A factory tour is offered at the Ceres facility. Its pieces appear in fine furniture stores nationwide. The business was refocused on manufacturing after the founders chose to prioritize craftsmanship over retail. Today, the company highlights its status as a domestic producer, its made-to-order model, and its environmental practices as key differentiators.
