About Sumner Woodworker Store
Sumner Woodworker Store operates in Sumner, Washington, in a building with roots dating back to 1889. The business has been family-owned since 1996, when John and Joan Schmit — John a former Boeing executive who restored classic wooden boats — decided to open a woodworking store in a property they were renovating. The Schmit family's personal passion for woodcraft shaped the store's founding mission. The store runs a nearly 10,000-square-foot retail facility stocked with woodworking tools, supplies, and a wide selection of exotic and premium woods. It carries brands such as SuperMax drum sanders, SawStop professional cabinet saws, Robert Sorby woodturning tools, and Colwood wood-burning tools. Every tool sold is inspected, assembled, and tested before it leaves the store. The inventory includes nearly 100 species of wood, plus turning blocks, carving blocks, and pen-making materials. The staff is composed entirely of experienced woodworkers who provide hands-on product guidance. The store serves hobbyist and professional woodworkers, woodcarvers, and some metalworkers. Its customer base ranges from DIY enthusiasts and small-shop professionals to woodturners seeking specialized tools and materials. It positions itself as a one-stop shop for woodworking and wood carving in Washington state. The Schmit family started the business to offer a knowledgeable, non-commercialized alternative to big-box retailers. They differentiate by ensuring tools are ready to run out the door, maintaining deep product expertise, and preserving a historical store environment that reflects the community's woodworking heritage.
