Viking Steel Fabricators began in 1950 as the Fredericksburg Machine Shop in downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia. After moving to its current Airport Avenue location beside the city fairgrounds in the 1970s, the shop was purchased by Clayton Mills from his uncle Mr. Stoner. In 1985 Mills hired Don Breivik to start a steel fabrication division; Breivik bought the business in 1999, renaming it Fredericksburg Machine & Steel and expanding to 13 employees. Ownership passed to Don's sons Luke and Erik in 2016, with Luke becoming sole owner in 2017. The 2019 acquisition of Virginia Architectural Metals added ornamental iron and historic restoration capabilities. The company remains family‑operated, with Luke Breivik as president and multiple relatives on staff. The firm fabricates and erects structural and miscellaneous steel for commercial, institutional, and residential projects throughout Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland. Services include shop and field welding, plate shearing, plate bending and rolling, pipe threading, plasma cutting, and custom handrails in carbon steel, aluminum, stainless steel, bronze, brass, and wrought iron. Viking also stocks steel shapes, plate, pipe, tubing, bar grating, and expanded metal for sale. A 13‑person crew works from the Airport Avenue facility, handling jobs from ornamental railings to large structural packages. Completed projects span the Antietam Battlefield Tower (Maryland), the Admiral Club and the Pentagon (D.C. area), Virginia Railway Express stations, the Orange County Public Safety Building, the Eastern Shore Public Library, and a satellite dish mount in Greenland. Customers include general contractors, developers, government agencies, healthcare providers such as Patient First, and retailers like AAA. The historic preservation niche, strengthened by the Virginia Architectural Metals acquisition, targets restoration of landmark structures. Viking highlights its 70‑plus years in Fredericksburg, mobile welding service, and a full steel inventory as differentiators. The 2019 closure of the machine shop to concentrate solely on fabrication reflects a strategic response to sustained demand for structural and ornamental metalwork, supported by the expertise of former Virginia Architectural Metals owners Mike and Betsy Rodrigue.
