About Barn Wood Furniture
Barn Wood Furniture operates from Union Grove, Alabama, where founder Eddie Abernathy began repurposing reclaimed barn wood into rustic furniture in 2012. After a construction downturn left Abernathy and his brothers with idle time, a friend delivered a load of weathered barn boards. Abernathy built Adirondack chairs as gifts, then listed pieces on Craigslist and Facebook with help from his wife, Sonja. A request for a custom bar and barstools sparked steady orders, and the backyard shed quickly grew into an L‑shaped workshop heated by a stove fashioned from an old water heater. The shop produces made‑to‑order furniture — beds, tables, chairs, trunks, swings, walls, ceilings, light fixtures, bars, cupboards and bookcases — all handcrafted from boards salvaged from dismantled barns. Abernathy applies his 25‑year framing background to safely take down structures, often bartering removal for the lumber. Each board is inspected for soundness, then dried in a custom‑built kiln to eliminate pests and stabilize moisture. The facility includes a large worktable and expanded storage, though headcount and annual volume are not disclosed. Customers span eleven states and include homeowners seeking one‑of‑a‑kind pieces as well as commercial clients such as bars, restaurants and hunting‑stand operators. Notable projects include a custom barn‑wood bar and barstools for a Christmas gift, a TV stand for a Cullman resident, and a dining table, hall tree and foyer table for a Madison family. The company also designs structural elements like doors, ceilings and signage. Abernathy says the business was born from a desire to give discarded wood a second life and to build pieces that last generations. The operation differentiates itself by offering barn removal in exchange for material, kiln‑drying every board, and leveraging construction expertise to ensure structural integrity in each furniture item.
