About BY DESIGN Furniture & Interior Design
BY DESIGN Furniture & Interior Design operates from a showroom in Clive, Iowa, a suburb of Des Moines. The business traces its roots to December 1976 when Russell and Ruthann Clark helped their son Kevin and daughter-in-law Bonita open Wood Stock Ltd., a store dedicated to unfinished wood furniture in Des Moines. The current BY DESIGN entity was established in 1998 after the Clarks merged their wood specialty store with an upholstery concept called Sofas by Design. The firm combines a retail showroom with a full-service interior design studio. Its designers — degreed professionals — help clients specify customizable furniture sourced from vendors such as American Leather, Four Hands, Norwalk Furniture, and BDI. The showroom features a fabric wall stocked with thousands of fabrics and leathers, and dining tables can be ordered in wood, tile, stone, or glass tops with various finishes. The company also offers furniture restoration services and a furniture protection plan. BY DESIGN serves residential clients throughout the Des Moines metro area and also partners with outside designers through a to-the-trade program. Its customer base includes homeowners furnishing living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms, home offices, and outdoor spaces. The company’s portfolio includes projects ranging from single-room refreshes to whole-home designs. The Clarks founded the business on a mission to listen, inform, and inspire clients who view their homes as a focal point of their lives. The company emphasizes that it does not impose a signature style but instead helps each client discover a personal aesthetic through highly customizable product options and one-on-one design consultation.
