About DownEastWoodArt
DownEast Wood Art operates from a shop in South Portland, Maine, where founder James Vander Schaaf designs and builds custom furniture. The shop produces one-of-a-kind furniture pieces and accepts commissions, working primarily with domestic hardwoods such as black cherry, figured maple (including tiger, birdseye, and spalted varieties), walnut, and ash. Processes encompass traditional joinery, hand and power tool work, jig and fixture making, design, and finishing. Vander Schaaf also offers woodworking education, sharing techniques ranging from tool safety to advanced methods. The business serves individual clients seeking custom furniture and students pursuing woodworking instruction. Pieces such as a five-drawer multi-wood chest have been created for private clients, and the shop has been featured by the South Portland Development Department.
