About Paulus Fine Furniture
Paulus Fine Furniture operates from a studio in Harpswell, Maine, where founder Paulus Wanrooij has been crafting contemporary furniture since 2001. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Wanrooij grew up around woodworking—his father and uncle were both craftsmen—and he credits them with instilling a sense for beauty, harmony, and balance. After years of encouragement to work with his hands, he enrolled in the Fine Woodworking Program at Haywood College in North Carolina in 2001, marking the formal start of his professional practice. The studio produces a range of studio furniture including coffee tables, dining tables, desks, consoles, entertainment centers, and shelving. Each piece begins with sketches, full-size drawings, and scale models; Wanrooij often uses plain cardboard to visualize the evolving form before cutting wood. The work is carried out within the four walls of his studio, emphasizing a hands-on, iterative process that blends function with aesthetic restraint. A 2017 review in the Bedford Pound Ridge Record Review described Wanrooij’s vision and craftsmanship as "breathtaking," noting the unique employment of wood in his designs. Wanrooij says he started the business to create furniture that is a pleasure to live with—harmonious creations of function and beauty. His approach centers on capturing harmony, beauty, and functionality, with lines that emphasize boundlessness.
