About Furniture Classics
Furniture Classics operates a 10,000-square-foot showroom at 433 West 5th Avenue in downtown Anchorage, Alaska. The business traces its roots to the late 1950s when Anchorage pioneer Helen Calrquist founded Eckman's on 4th Avenue; after a bank takeover forced a relocation to 5th Avenue, the store passed to the Nerland family and later to longtime sales associate Erma Howell. In 1989, Howell partnered with current owner Colleen Hickey to establish Furniture Classics, continuing a lineage of female entrepreneurship in Alaska's furniture trade. The company retails American-made furniture and home decor, offering same-day purchase from the showroom floor alongside custom-order programs that provide access to over 2,000 fabric and finish options. Complimentary interior design consultation is available for both showroom and custom clients. A three-person team — owner-designer Colleen Hickey, showroom manager Catharine Unger, and warehouse manager Garnett Morrow — handles receiving, preparation, assembly, and white-glove delivery across Anchorage, Girdwood, Eagle River, and the Matanuska Valley. Furniture Classics serves residential customers throughout Southcentral Alaska, including homeowners seeking turnkey furnishings, clients commissioning custom upholstery, and design clients requesting full-room planning. The company states its mission is to provide quality American-made furniture to Alaskans at an affordable price without sacrificing comfort or style, leveraging decades of buying experience to distinguish "heavy hitters" from lesser brands.
