Mountain Meadow Wool Mill was founded in 2007 by Karen Hostetler in Buffalo, Wyoming. The mill emerged from a mission to preserve the ranching culture of the Great American West, where Basque sheepherders had established small ranches in the late 1800s. Declining wool prices over the preceding decades threatened those operations, prompting Hostetler and her partner to open a full-service mill that would offer fair prices to ranchers for their wool. The mill handles the entire wool supply chain under one roof: it sources fleece directly from Wyoming ranches, then scours, cards, spins, and knits the fiber into finished goods. Operations include custom processing for outside growers, in-house spinning of yarn, and knitting of apparel, blankets, and home goods. The facility also runs an eco-friendly processing line and maintains a retail shop and wholesale program. Primary customers are Wyoming sheep ranchers who sell their clip to the mill, as well as wholesale buyers and direct consumers seeking American-made wool yarn, knitting kits, baby blankets, beanies, and wearable art. The mill has supplied fiber for University of Wyoming branded products and collaborates with local artisans through its Legacy Yarn Guild. Hostetler started the business to reverse the decline of the region’s wool economy and to keep processing jobs in Wyoming.
