About Maine Adirondack Chairs, LLC
Maine Adirondack Chairs, LLC operates from Vassalboro, Maine. The business traces its roots to 2012 when founder Rob transitioned from Grapevine Hill Woodworking to the current name after a suggestion from John Shaw. Rob remains involved while Nita now manages the shop and builds products, alongside Kate. The company handcrafts outdoor furniture exclusively from Eastern White Cedar (Thuja occidentalis), planing and sanding only one face to yield thicker boards and reduce processing time. The small woodworking shop produces Adirondack chairs, rocking chairs, picnic tables, footstools, coffee tables, and campfire stools, with a capacity of roughly 30–40 chairs per week. Chairs are built then broken down into knock-down kits for shipping; smaller items such as footstools and coffee tables ship assembled. Products serve both residential buyers and commercial settings—the “EZ‑UP” chair is designed for the rigors of commercial use. Customers order directly through the website, and the build‑to‑order model means inventory rarely sits on hand; high spring demand often leads to backorders by April. The venture began almost by accident, driven by geographic economic pressures. After sparse demand for custom kitchen cabinets, Rob pivoted to Adirondack chairs, with most designs originating from customer requests and ergonomic experiments. The single‑side milling method and exclusive use of local white cedar keep prices reasonable while delivering rot‑resistant, decades‑long durability.
