About Valley Woodworkers
Valley Woodworkers operates from Dunbar, West Virginia. The organization was founded in 2008 and functions as a woodworking club open to all skill levels. Its origins trace to a dual mission: training local residents in woodworking crafts and producing heirloom-quality wooden toys for the Salvation Army’s Christmas distribution to underprivileged children, a program ongoing since 1991. The club holds monthly meetings on the second Thursday at its clubhouse on 12th Street, featuring project show-and-tell sessions and technical demonstrations. The facility serves as a gathering point rather than a commercial production shop; no headcount, square footage, or output volumes are published. Participants range from beginners to professional woodworkers, while the toy program benefits children served by the Salvation Army. Local businesses such as Woodcraft and Withrow Supply in Huntington provide sponsorship and material support, including finishes, machinery, hardware, and sharpening services. The group emphasizes community improvement through skill-sharing and charitable giving. Its distinguishing feature is the long-standing commitment to producing handcrafted toys for children in need, coupled with an open-door policy that welcomes anyone with an interest in woodworking.
