About Vermont Made Furniture Handcrafted by Thurston
Vermont Made Furniture Handcrafted by Thurston operates from a workshop in Brandon, Vermont. The company was founded in 1960 and remains family-owned and operated, now in its third generation of Thurston family leadership. What began as a local woodworking enterprise has grown into a direct-to-consumer maker of heirloom-quality solid wood furniture. The company designs and builds bedroom, dining, office, and bath furniture from sustainably harvested North American hardwoods — primarily cherry, oak, walnut, and maple. Production runs from rough milling through finishing in their Vermont factory, with each piece made to order. Collections such as Amesbury, Manchester, Weybridge-Dover, Addison, Allen, Chelsea, and Armstrong span mid-century, Shaker, mission, and contemporary styles. Customers select wood species and configurations through a custom-order process; no inventory is held for immediate shipment. The primary market is residential buyers furnishing homes across the United States. The company sells directly to consumers via its website, eliminating middlemen. It has served over 1,000 homes, shipping nationwide with free white-glove delivery on orders above $5,000. Thurston emphasizes a lifetime guarantee on every piece, sustainable sourcing from well-managed forests, environmentally friendly finishes, and an energy-efficient workshop. The firm highlights its commitment to local employment — paying living wages to Vermont craftspeople in a safe workplace — and to reducing carbon emissions by manufacturing domestically rather than importing.
