About Chilton Furniture
Chilton Furniture traces its roots to 1885 when Chilton Manufacturing Co. was established in Portland, Maine, producing paints, varnishes, and industrial coatings. The business was acquired by the Martens family in 1936, shifting focus to stains and finishes for furniture makers. In 2014, the Levin family took ownership, refocusing the company on exclusive furniture designs crafted from domestically sourced North American hardwoods. Today, it operates as a family-owned brand headquartered in Portland, with a flagship showroom there and a second location in Freeport. The company designs contemporary, functional furniture—including seating, tables, storage, beds, and accessories—and collaborates with a network of independent makers in Maine and the Midwest to handcraft each piece from premium domestic hardwoods such as cherry, maple, walnut, and white oak. All materials are sourced in the United States. Chilton provides nationwide delivery and backs its products with a lifetime warranty for the original owner. Chilton serves both direct consumers and trade professionals, including interior designers and retailers, through a trade partner program that offers discounts and benefits. Its furniture is marketed for residential use, with collections such as Shaker, Hudson, and Maine Made appealing to customers seeking handcrafted, domestically produced pieces. The brand emphasizes its commitment to enduring craftsmanship, domestic sourcing, and New England design heritage. The lifetime warranty reflects confidence in the durability of its furniture, while the maker-partnership model aims to sustain regional woodworking traditions.
