About George’s Furniture
George's Furniture is a second-generation family-owned business located in Marietta, Pennsylvania, operating from a farm location just outside historic Maytown since 1975. The company was founded in 1970 by George Martin as George's Woodcrafts, stemming from his early interest in woodworking and a rocking chair design he created at age 10. In 2008, George retired and passed the business to his daughter Juanita and son-in-law Chris Horst, who continue the tradition. The workshop produces custom handcrafted Amish furniture using 100% solid hardwood—walnut, cherry, oak, and hard maple—with no plywood, particle board, or veneers. Each piece is built by a single craftsman from lumber selection through final finishing, signed and dated for authenticity. The process includes design consultation, customization of dimensions, finish, and details, and handcrafted construction. Typical lead time is 2-3 months. The company sells direct to customers, eliminating middleman markup. The company serves residential customers seeking heirloom-quality furniture for homes, including tables, chairs, benches, and extension tables. Examples include a customer from Brookeville, MD who purchased a table, chairs, and bench. The business was started to address frustration with poor-quality furniture; George Martin's rocking chair innovation reflected a focus on durability and safety. The company differentiates itself through traditional Amish woodworking techniques, a year-long apprenticeship for craftsmen, direct-to-customer sales, and a lifetime value proposition.
