Lewis Woodshop LLC

About Lewis Woodshop LLC

Lewis Woodshop LLC operates from a 1,000-square-foot workshop in Essex, Vermont, a rural town about 20 minutes from Burlington. The business was founded by David Lewis, who grew up in Lutherville, Maryland, and developed a passion for fine furniture making while attending the Vermont Woodworking School. After completing his training, Lewis established his own shop, building each piece by hand using locally sourced, sustainably harvested lumber. The shop produces custom furniture including tables, dressers, beds, chests, chairs, and decorative pieces such as Kumiko lanterns. Each item is crafted individually using a blend of power tools and traditional hand tools—chisels, saws, and sanders—allowing for both precision and artistic detail. The workshop spans roughly 1,000 square feet and is run solely by Lewis, who oversees every step from material selection to final finish. Lewis Woodshop serves private clients seeking bespoke, heirloom-quality furniture for residential settings. Past commissions have included Shaker-style hall tables, Kumiko-adorned end tables and lanterns, pencil-post beds, and chests of drawers. The shop also collaborates with clients on one-of-a-kind designs, guiding them through wood selection, style, and design choices. The company emphasizes a commitment to craftsmanship and sustainability. Lewis sources lumber that is sustainably grown and responsibly harvested, and he describes his work as a pursuit of harmony between utility and aesthetics, resulting in pieces that are considered functional works of art.
