Bernhard Woodwork Ltd.

About Bernhard Woodwork Ltd.

Bernhard Woodwork Ltd. has operated from Northbrook, Illinois since 1965, when the company transplanted European cabinetmaking traditions to the Chicago area. The business was founded on the premise that architectural woodwork requires both old-world craft and modern precision, a philosophy that continues to guide its work today. The firm produces custom architectural woodwork for commercial, retail, residential, and marine projects. Its craftsmen handle veneer matching, joinery, and finishing with lacquers, enamels, and oils, while also incorporating advanced manufacturing technologies to improve quality and speed. The shop serves as a single source from design collaboration through final installation, though facility size and headcount are not publicly disclosed. Bernhard Woodwork’s client base includes architects, designers, and planners across the United States. The company has completed hundreds of commercial and retail projects for major national brands, as well as high-end residential and marine interiors. A testimonial from Dirk Denison Architects highlights the firm’s attention to detail and proactive problem-solving on complex installations. The company distinguishes itself through a European-style apprenticeship program that cultivates long-tenured craftspeople—average tenure is 14 years—and a commitment to preserving the integrity of each architectural concept. By blending time-honored techniques with contemporary equipment, Bernhard Woodwork aims to deliver environments where form and function meet without compromise.
